IPGRI-SEARCA SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

 

The SEAMEO Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (EPGRI) are pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of scholarships aimed at strengthening human resources in developing countries in Asia Pacific for the conservation and use of plant genetic resources (PGR).

The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding candidates entering the newly established Program on Plant Genetic Resources at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos (UPLB) leading to the Master of Science degree.

The graduate program in PGR Conservation and Management (MSPGR) aims to equip the student with:

Scholarship applicants must fulfill all admission requirements as stated in the box to gain admission to the above Graduate Program In addition, they are required to submit two copies of the SEARCA-IPGRI Application Form fully completed. The application must be accompanied with:

  1. 2 to 3-page composition prepared by the applicant indicating why he/she feels that sustainable agriculture/plant genetic resources are important, how the applicant intends to use his/her knowledge after completion of the degree, and a study plan indicating major and minor fields of specialization which the applicant wishes to pursue.

  2. An initial research outline on the proposed topic of research, on plant genetic resources, indicating how the thesis research might be organized including possible collaborating institutions and location of research. Proposals for research undertaken in an applicant's home country will be considered wherever possible. Higher priority will be given to proposals on Coconut Genetic Resources.

  3. A letter from the employer endorsing the application and indicating the conditions of any leave of absence required for the duration of the study program.

  4. A certification from the applicant's employer that there is no pending case (criminal, administrative or civil) against the applicant.

  5. Written consent of the applicant that all application documents submitted to the UPLB Graduate School may be made available to the selection panel for scholarship evaluation purposes.

  6. Two copies of a passport-size photo of the applicant.

  7. Applicants coming from South East Asian Region must obtain endorsement from the Ministry of Education in their home country.

Admission Requirements to UPLB Graduate School for MSPGR

For those applying for admission into the MSPGR Program at UPLB, the following documents should be submitted directly to the Graduate School on or before 31 December 1998 for first semester admission and 31 May 1999 for second semester admission:

  1. Two copies of duly completed application form for UPLB Graduate School admission.

  2. Certification of the language of instruction from the university registrar where the student graduated or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score.

  3. Two sealed letters of recommendation from previous professors.

  4. Official transcript of academic records for the previous degree's earned.

An application fee of US$30 should also be sent to the UPLB Graduate School in postal money order or cheque.
